We covered math, history, reading, geography and crafting with one quilting activity.
After reading Papa and the Pioneer Quilt with my six year old she was inspired to sew her first quilt.
This was not the first time a children's quilting story has inspired my children. When my oldest was around six years old, she was similarly inspired to try out the quilting craft after reading The Keeping Quilt by Patrica Polloco. We have also enjoyed The Quilt Makers Gift.
Papa and the Pioneer Quilt tells the story of a family traveling west through several different states before arriving in Oregon. Walking with a train of wagons, the little girl meets Rachel, a new bride collecting scraps of fabric to make a quilt. She decides to start her own collection.
My daughter's quilt was constructed from forty-eight 2.5 inch squares and twenty-four 4.5 inch squares which were measured using a 1 inch grid and with a ruler. (measuring)
Several times throughout the cutting process, the number of completed and number of squares still needed was determined. (counting, adding, subtracting)
The completed squares were arranged in a pattern which similar colors were aligned in diagonal rows. (patterns)
After watching her sister sew several quilts, she flew through the process and felt like a big girl.
